OREGANO ESSENTIAL OIL

Oreganum vulgare

Oregano is a well-known kitchen herb of Mediterranean origin. The Romans were instrumental in spreading it all over Europe. But, it did not need much encouragement. Much to the delight of butterflies who love the pinkish-red flowers, Oregano can now be found growing wild on sunny slopes everywhere. Medieval herbalists held this herb in high esteem. The old herbals are full of praise for this humble herb. According to Culpeper „There is scarcely a better herb growing for relieving a sour stomach, loss of appetite, cough, consumption of the lungs; it cleanses the body of choler, expels poison, remedies the infirmities of the spleen…“

His enthusiasm was justified. Modern research confirms extremely powerful properties that are indeed as useful and versatile as the old herbalists had claimed.

Traditional
The use of Oregano essential oil in Aromatherapy is somewhat controversial. Partly to blame is the fact that the source materials and the specific profiles vary. The essential oil of Origanum vulgare is extremely powerful and considered an irritant to the skin and mucous membranes. Although researchers have found it to be very effective as an anti-parasitic, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant, Oregano essential oil is not considered safe for regular aromatherapy uses. Most tests have been performed on animals, which does not always reliably predict the effect on the human body. More studies are needed.

Magical
In the ancient world, Wild Oregano was considered one of the most effective protective herbs. As an anti-demonic, it was used to banish demons and evil spirits from the home and barn. Modern practitioners of the magical arts use it to cleanse their ritual tools and ceremonial spaces

Scent

The essential oil is distilled from the dried flowering tops. The resulting oil is pale yellow with a warm, herbaceous, slightly spicy aroma. It blends well with rosemary, spike lavender, citronella, cedarwood, hyssop, and pine.
